Story

Pokemon Throwback is a hack of the Gen 1 remakes that aims to refine and enhance the classic Kanto experience. Instead of changing the game completely, it adds quality-of-life improvements, new features, and bug fixes—staying true to the original GBA style while delivering a more polished version of the classic story.

Features & Overall Changes

GB Sounds

  • Switch between GBA and original Game Boy music.
  • Uses authentic Gen 1 audio from Red/Green/Blue/Yellow.
  • Access via the GB Sounds item in your Key Items.
  • Music choice is saved and supports stereo or mono sound.

Catch ’em All

  • All Gen 1 and 2 Pokemon are available and integrated naturally.
  • Trade evolutions work via Bill’s Teleporter (or by normal trade).
  • No Gen 3 Pokemon included (yet).
  • National Dex is given post-Elite Four, regardless of caught count.
  • Sevii Islands unlocked after beating the game.
  • Use Gen 2+ Pokemon in the main story.

Wardrobe

  • Player and rival sprites updated to match their original Gen 1 looks.
  • Optional patch available to remove the female trainer’s hat.

Quality-of-Life Improvements

  • Faster saving.
  • Skippable tutorials.
  • Infinite TMs and unlimited Move Tutor uses.
  • Start with Running Shoes and run indoors.
  • Trees stay gone after being Cut once.
  • Repel prompts to reuse automatically.
  • Poison no longer damages in overworld.
  • Nature-boosted stats are color-coded.
  • Magma Armor/Flame Body speed up egg hatching.
  • Correct music plays when collecting items.

Gameplay Adjustments

  • All berries (except Lansat/Starf) are obtainable in-game.
  • Berries 21–26 now reduce EVs and raise friendship.
  • EVs capped at 252 per stat.
  • Major glitches fixed: Dex species bug, roaming Roar bug, IV bug, Nugget Bridge bug, Pomeg glitch, and more.
  • Mt. Moon expanded and polished.
  • Updated wild held items to include newer-gen items.
  • Many new items added, like Choice Band, Shell Bell, Light Ball, and more (see “Newly-Added Items.txt” for locations).

  • Healing animation no longer plays for eggs.
  • “Moves that never miss” now show “–” accuracy.
  • Hidden Itemfinder delay removed.
  • Rock Smash can now yield random items.
  • Localization fixes: gamblers, “blacked out,” Celadon Condominiums, etc.
  • Green and Charine renamed to Blue and Janine.
  • Gym Leaders and E4 have Gen 1-level teams.
  • Music fixes: League theme, Celadon theme in link rooms.
  • Game Freak screen now shows “Presents”.
  • Pewter City Jigglypuff spins like in Gen 1.

Higher Quality Cries

  • Replaces Pokemon cries with higher-quality WAV versions.
  • Takes up more ROM space but improves audio fidelity.

Custom Learnsets (Optional)
