Changelog

Version 0.1.7

You know what’s a travesty? Malamar isn’t in Sol Version. I wanted to put it in, given its possible alien origin, but its evolution gimmick of turning the game system upside down wouldn’t work, so I left it out of the game. Well I’ve come to the epiphany that I can’t leave my friend Malamar out of the game any longer. You may rejoice. Malamar has now been added to Sol Version. (And there’s some other stuff too, if you somehow care.)

Inkay can now be captured either in the Tropical Zone or at Route 9. In order to evolve it into the glorious Malamar, you’ll need to level it up while it knows the move Topsy-Turvy, which it now learns at level 29. I tried to get some sort of screen flipping gimmick going, but couldn’t get it to work, so this is the next best way to represent it’s unique evolution. (Seriously, I tried making a menu option that flips the screen, and Inkay only evolves when the option is toggled as well as trying to get the game to track if you’ve set Windows to flip the display on your screen upside down. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get any of these ideas to works. It’s as if we are not worthy to witness the true glory of Malamar’s proper evolution.)

And to better reflect how amazing Malamar’s powers of mind control are, I’ve created a new ability for it called Manipulator, which works similarly to Static or Poison Point, except it causes confusion, and isn’t limited to physical contact moves. (Some other Pokémon like Eatyai and Orbeetle get it as well, but their mind control powers aren’t nearly as strong as Malamar’s.)

DISCLAIMER: I have not been mind controlled. Why would you ask?

  • Added my friend Malamar and Inkay into the game.
  • Added the new ability Manipulator to the ability pool of Inkay, Malamar, Orbeetle, Elgyem, Beheeyem, and Eatyai. (Replacing Illuminate on Orbeetle and Tinted Lens on the Elgyem line.)
  • Properly implemented Professor Pine’s Tenno Pokédex evaluation, so that he doesn’t check you against the numbers of the much smaller Kanto Dex, as he did previously.
  • Added sound effects to the Pokédex evaluation.
  • Fixed a glitch that made it impossible to evolve male Combee into Vespidron.
  • Fixed a glitch that would cause an error message to appear if battling against a trainer using a Pokémon that knows the move Irradiate, such as Tennoan Grimer.

What’s new in v0.1.6 Hotfix

I was just made aware of a bug that prevents you from continuing on in the story if you lose either the battle against Cosmo or Orion in the Shooting Star Chamber during the Starstreak Mountains story event. This hotfix will repair that issue.

If you have encountered this problem, make sure that you save your game outside of the Shooting Star Chamber before you update your game. Loading a save file that has encountered this issue inside the Shooting Star Chamber will lead to unintended behavior.

Also, this is the first time I’ve had to put out a hotfix since changing the location of the download, so be sure to find the new hotfix download link in the original post.

Changelog

  • Repaired an issue that would prevent story progress if the player lost either battle in the Shooting Star Chamber during the Starstreak Mountains event.

What’s new in v0.1.6

Mystery of the Keystone Hints

The “Mystery of the Keystone” side quest requires you to go on a hunt across the region in order to find 32 mysterious Mediums and Sages. To tell the truth, I’ve never quite liked how this quest turned out. I liked the idea of the hunt, but the fact that you can only start it towards the end of the game means you are required to recheck the entire region to find them. I love a good treasure hunt, but only when you can hunt as you’re exploring the areas for the first time. Having to go back and check every nook and cranny that you’ve already checked isn’t as great. Well, to alleviate that issue, I’ve added a new NPC that give you hints on where to find each Medium and Sage, removing the need to search blindly if you don’t enjoy that sort of thing.

Once you begin the “Mystery of the Keystone” quest, you’ll find a new Medium standing outside of the Ort City graveyard. She is not one of the 32 you’re hunting for. But she does have the ability to sense where those 32 are. Ask her, and she’ll provide you with a hint as to the location of one of the Mediums or Sages that you have yet to find. She won’t tell you exactly where to go, but if you think about her cryptic words, you’ll be able to find the locations much easier than before. Once you’ve found the one she hinted about, she’ll have a new hint for you.

Changelog

  • Added an NPC at Ort City to give hints for the “Mystery of the Keystone” side quest.
  • Added party preview sprites for Malworm, Pterabite, and Carapice.
  • Removed some unintended usage of various Gen IX mechanics where things were meant to work with more traditional mechanics instead.
  • Fixed two tiles beneath the Cycling Road on Route 7 that would cause a softlock if you stepped on them.
  • Fixed the balloon docks at each Balloon Trip location so they can’t be walked off the side of.
  • Fixed the interaction with various other tiles around the region.
  • Corrected miscellaneous typos across the game.
  • As the single most important update this game has ever received, I’ve replaced the outdated Nintendo Switch in the player character’s room with a Switch 2. Now there’s no need to be embarrassed about being so behind the times.

Version 0.1.2 Hotfix Update

  • Repaired the potential softlock in the Den of Mega Evolution.
  • Fixed a crash when entering the elevator in Planetary HQ after completing the climax event.
  • Disabled opening the pause menu during the Kanaveral Gym puzzle.
  • Fixed an issue that caused the game to crash on start up, preventing certain people from being able to play the game in the first place. (Possibly a JoiPlay exclusive issue.)
  • Repaired Cosmo’s event at Planetary HQ would crash the game when speaking to him after battling the Cosmic Guardians.
  • Removed the softlock upon completing the “Shock and a Hard Place” side quest in the Starcore Underground.
  • Repaired the faulty Electric Terrain tiles in the Starcore Underground.
  • Fixed the crash that would occur when showing a Pokémon that knows Fly to the Birdkeeper on Route 16 for the “Fly High” side quest. Also tweaked the event overall to function better and allow for Fly Level 2 and 3 to be shown as well.
  • Fixed the crash that occurred when speaking to the PokéMart employee on the right side of the Pokémon League mart.

Version 0.1.2

Introducing Mighty Trainers

Mighty Trainers are a new type of trainer that can be found across the Tenno Region. A Mighty Trainer is exactly what it sounds like, a trainer who is stronger than all the other trainers in their area. You’ll encounter your first one at Route 5, and after that every route you travel to will have a Mighty Trainer. Caves with trainers, such as Mt. Corona, Starcore Underground, Frostover Island, Brutal Cave, and Victory Road also have Mighty Trainers. Mighty Trainers will have Pokémon that are at a higher level than average for the area they’re in, as well as more Pokémon on their team than typically encountered in that area. This makes them perfect opponents to train against. Even better, each Mighty Trainer can be rematched once per day. There are a total of 22 Mighty Trainers across the Tenno Region. They are clearly recognizable by the fact that their partner Pokémon stands next to them in the overworld. Whenever you defeat a Mighty Trainer for the first time, you’ll be rewarded with a Rare Candy. Defeat 7 Mighty Trainers and you’ll be given an Exp. Charm. However, this Exp. Charm has not yet reached its full potential, and will only boost experience earned in battles against wild Pokémon. To unlock its full potential, you’re going to have to find and defeat all 22 Mighty Trainers, which will then allow it to boost the experience from any battle. Not only that, but once you defeat all the Mighty Trainers, every Mighty Trainer in the region will become more powerful, giving you the ultimate set of training partners. A new side quest to defeat all Mighty Trainers can be started simply by talking to any Mighty Trainer. If you would prefer to play the game with its original balance, the Exp. Charm can be turned off.

Kanaveral City Navigation

Another new feature is a whole new way to navigate your way through the streets of Kanaveral City. If you ever got lost in the massive city, or were simply too overwhelmed by it to try exploring, this update is for you. Each of Kanaveral City’s streets now have a name, which can be seen by reading the street signs at each street corner. But street names are useless without a map. Kanaveral City now has map boards placed at various key points of interest across the city. Interact with the board to pull up an interactable map of Kanaveral City that will tell you where the various points of interest are in relation to the streets. Between the street signs and maps, you can now navigate Kanaveral City easier than ever before. There’s also a new side quest to help you get the hang of navigating this way.

  • Mighty Trainers have been added across the world to train against. Also added the new side quest “All Mighties” with the goal of battling them all.
  • Navigate Kanaveral City with street signs and maps. Also added the new side quest “The Lost City” to help get the hang of the system.
  • Repaired a (rather nasty) error that was causing the final boss to take less damage the lower its health was, rendering the boss extremely difficult, if not impossible to defeat.
  • As removing the above error made the final boss much easier, it has been rebalanced to compensate.
  • (Possibly) Fixed the glitch that would sometimes cause Pokémon to lack their first ability.*
  • Fixed the function of the Cosmic Ball and Mega Ball so that they can actually be used.
  • Repaired the potential crash after battling Crate.
  • Repaired the crash when exiting through the main Den of Mega Evolution door.
  • Repaired the extendable stairs in Route 16 so that they can actually be used after using Tinker to repair the controls.
  • Fixed a handful of cases where dual-type moves weren’t being treated as their second type for certain aspects of damage calculation.
  • Various other small tweaks and improvements.

Important Notes by the Creator

  • This game is in beta and is an unfinished product. While playing, expect to encounter glitches and game crashes. If you do, please report them, as explained in the “Reporting Issues” section below.
  • Due to the chances of encountering a game crash, I recommend saving your game frequently, especially before and after difficult or important battles or after long story events.
  • The game is essentially complete up until the credits roll. That means you can play the entire main story, but there are no post-game elements added yet. Future updates to come.
  • This game is designed to be a traditional and authentic Pokémon experience. It will not contain features common to fan games, such as a speed-up button.
  • This game is designed to play more like the earlier Pokémon games (Gens I through V), rather than the more modern ones. As such, it may require more effort and thought to beat than you might be used to from modern Pokémon games.
  • The game features the classic version of Exp. Share, rather than the modern version which distributes experience among all Pokémon in the party automatically. An Exp. All item, which functions like the modern Exp. Share, does exist in the game, but it is a reward for a side quest that spans the entire region and cannot be obtained until the very end of the game. It is better to think of it as a post-game item.
  • One aspect of real Pokémon games that could not be replicated by this game is interactions with other players. This means it would usually be impossible to evolve Pokémon that require being traded. However, if you want to evolve such a Pokémon, just show a Pokémon that evolves through trade to the woman on the second floor of any Pokémon Center and she’ll give you a special item that can evolve these Pokémon instead.
  • Certain aspects of this game may be incompatible with JoiPlay. I have received reports of graphic display issues, random lag, and missing sound effects, all coming from JoiPlay, rather than any specific issue with the game.
  • JoiPlay prevents players from skipping the opening movie. Players using JoiPlay should either delete or rename the folder titled “Movies” within their “Pokémon Sol Version” folder. This will cause the game to automatically skip the movie. This will have to be done every time the game is updated.

How to Update

Update Instructions: If you’ve already downloaded an older version of Sol Version and are looking to update, simply delete your outdated “Pokémon Sol Version” folder and download the current version from the above link. Your save data will transfer over automatically.

Hotfix Instructions: If and only if there’s a hotfix download link listed below the regular download link, then you’ll need to apply the hotfix to Sol Version to play the most up-to-date version. Click the link to download a file called “Game.rgssad” and move that file into your “Pokémon Sol Version” folder. When it asks you if you want to replace the existing file, say yes. Now your game is up to date. You should always try to have to most recent hotfix applied to your game. If you’ve just installed Sol Version for the first time and a hotfix is available, you should apply the hotfix right away.

Known Issues

  • Sometimes when an ability’s name displays in battle, it will instead display the name of the Pokémon’s other ability. This is a purely visual bug. The proper ability is still activating.
  • Sometimes the game will crash when transitioning from the opening movie to the title screen. If this happens, you can simply relaunch the game and skip the movie to circumvent the crash.
  • A handful of Tenno Pokémon are still a work in progress and do not yet have certain graphics. For a complete list of Pokémon missing some or all of their graphics, see here.
  • Any Mega Evolved Pokémon not listed here is not yet available in the game, even if a Mega Stone is obtainable. The Mega Stone is a placeholder and will not work.
