Description
Pokemon – The Unown King is a myth-focused ROM hack developed as an entry for the second Team Aqua ROM-Hacking Competition. The project is built as a decomp using the pokeemerald-expansion base and is designed around exploration, lore discovery, and unconventional progression. Instead of relying on familiar legends, it explores a lesser-known corner of Pokemon mythology centered on the Unown and their long-forgotten ruler.
Storyline / Lore
At the beginning of creation, Arceus formed time, space, and the foundations required for the universe to exist. To populate this new reality, Arceus created Mew, a life-form capable of reproducing itself endlessly. While this process filled the world with living beings, Arceus desired greater diversity.
To achieve this, the Unown species came into existence. Through the interaction of their mysterious psychic signals, the Unown altered Mew into entirely new forms of life. However, such power needed structure to maintain balance. To guide the Unown and direct their influence, Arceus created a singular entity known as the Unown King.
According to legend, the Unown King was eventually sealed away within a structure now called the Temple of the Unown King. The reason for this sealing is unknown, as the story surrounding it was never properly recorded.
Or so it seems.
Ancient inscriptions are said to line the walls of the temple, supposedly revealing the rest of the tale. Unfortunately, no one has been able to interpret them—until now. By locating Unown scattered both inside and outside the temple, the player gains the tools needed to decode these messages and uncover the truth behind the Unown King’s fate.
Progress is not without resistance, as battles stand between you and many of the Unown. What awaits once the final inscription is revealed remains to be seen.
Features & Gameplay Notes
- Progression can feel demanding depending on playstyle, but smart strategies and creative approaches are heavily rewarded.
- Once an HM is obtained, its field effect can be used without the move being learned, provided the Pokémon is capable of learning it.
- Certain boss encounters are designed as single, powerful Pokémon battles instead of traditional trainer fights.
- The overworld design takes strong inspiration from Generation V aesthetics.
- Most of the background music consists of reimagined tracks from Final Fantasy VIII.
- NPC dialogue often contains useful hints, especially early on, making exploration and reading worthwhile.
- Around 100 Pokémon are obtainable, primarily from Generations I through V, with only a small number excluded.
KNOWN BUGS
As English isn’t my first language (that would be Italian; yes, this is technically an Italian ROM-Hack), I did my best do make sure the dialogue lines are as correct as they can possibly be, but it’s very likely that some mistakes slipped through. The very day I submitted this project to the competition I found myself fixing a couple. If you spot more, I encourage you to let me know.
Now, on with the actual bugs.
- If a wild Pokémon’s item is stolen with Thief and the Pokémon is then caught, the Pokémon will have another one of the same item after being caught, allowing to obtain two of the same item for the price of one.
- If an enemy Pokémon with the ability Illusion (which isn’t found in game) or Unknown (dangerous spoiler territory) transforms back into its species and faints, the sliding down effect won’t look correct because some portion of it will still be visible after sinking.
- Using Dive outside of battle may lower the background music’s volume until the music changes, e.g. a battle occours or the player dismounts.
- The audio’s ear-rape factor increases slightly over time, albeit not too much. This however was only experienced sometimes after speeding up emulation multiple times.
- On mGBA, after idling for about a minute without entrying any input, square waves may become almost silent for a while, then sound correct again.
Additional Notes
Version 1.0.0 is the competition build and is considered complete, though some planned content (custom battle backgrounds and the true ending) was cut due to time limits and is planned for version 2.0.0.
Playtesting took about 10 in-game hours with frequent emulation speed-ups.
The version includes no Repels, but there is a very obscure method to reduce encounter rates. All testing was done on the mGBA emulator on Windows 10.
