Creator Words about the Project
Welcome! For a decade now, I have seen thousands of people wishing for a Monster Hunter game in the style of Pokemon. And while the Stories franchise was certainly a bandaid on some people’s longings, it wasn’t quite what they asked for – even if they loved it. Last year, I set out to finally make my wish, and that of so many other people, come true. I never drew actual art before. I never worked on a Romhack before, nor did I have much knowledge on balance at all.
But I still wanted to make it happen.
So after 20 months of work, 8 of which with a team of great people, I can finally present to you…
Description
Pokemon Monster Hunter Emerald is a ROM hack of Pokemon Emerald, designed to merge elements from both the Monster Hunter and Pokemon universes. Titled Monster Hunter Emerald, the project does not attempt to fundamentally change the core structure or identity of Pokemon Emerald.
As a binary ROM hack, its primary modification is the replacement of Pokemon with Monsters from the Monster Hunter series. As a result, the original storyline and gameplay structure remain largely intact, with only minor additions added to refresh the experience. A detailed list of changes can be found below.
Features
This is a relatively straightforward ROM hack, with most of the new and notable content focused on the inclusion of Monster Hunter creatures. Key features include:
- Implementation of level caps
- Introduction of the Physical/Special split
- Over 100 Monsters from the Monster Hunter series replacing all Pokemon encounters
- Custom sprites, shiny variants, and team icons for all Monsters (note: unique backsprites are not included due to the difficulty of creating over 200 of them)
- Item names and icons adjusted to better reflect the Monster Hunter theme
- Several moves from later Pokemon generations (Gen 4+) have been added, along with entirely new moves
- Most existing moves updated to match their modern stats and effects
- Additional changes, such as type chart adjustments (e.g., two types gaining a new resistance), are detailed in the accompanying spreadsheet
Beyond these modifications, the core game remains largely unchanged. Optional modes such as the Battle Frontier and breeding are not supported and may contain residual Pokemon data or bugs. This also applies to certain features like the Trick House (after the first room) and opponent rematches.
Evolution Stones
Due to the fundamental differences between Pokemon and Monster Hunter, handling evolution required a different approach. To address this, five new “Evolution Stones” have been added (replacing the original Fire, Water, Moon, etc. stones). These items become available at different points in the game and are sold in the Market as soon as you arrive in certain towns. They allow players to upgrade their Monsters into stronger versions.
This may not be the most ideal solution, but it provides a functional and effective way to handle late-stage evolution for this release.
It’s important to note that not all Monsters evolve through these stones. Basic evolutions still work as usual—the stones are specifically used for Monsters that have reached full maturity and require an upgrade to a more powerful form.
Extra: Small Tips
- 999 Rare Candies are available in your PC at the start of the game, making leveling up easier if you choose to use them. There’s plenty to explore, so use them as needed!
- Swapping your team around is recommended to try out different Monsters and strategies.
- You’ll likely want to refer to the accompanying the DOCUMENTATION, which includes all key information about the game, including Monster data, evolution methods, move changes, and a general introduction to the project.
