Overview
In March, I embarked on a project to create a Legacy-style game for Fire Red, inspired by the work of the Smith Legacy team, who have been remaking games from Generations 1 to 3. This particular project was intended to be a unique take on Fire Red, filling a gap left by their existing work.
Due to various personal reasons and a loss of interest, I’ve decided to cancel the project. However, I’m leaving behind a canceled build for those who are interested.
The build shares several similarities with Yellow Legacy but also incorporates distinct differences. Although this project demanded considerable effort, I’ve chosen not to produce extensive documentation. This decision aligns with a nostalgic approach, reminiscent of how Pokémon games were once released with minimal guidance.
This project is essentially a quality-of-life hack, designed to improve the Fire Red experience without radically altering the core gameplay of Generation 3. It remains true to the original spirit of the game, offering a refined, but not modernized, experience.
Features
- Buffs and Nerfs: Adjustments have been made to various Pokémon and moves, with some being strengthened and others weakened to balance gameplay.
- Moveset Changes: Pokémon have updated movesets, offering new strategic options and altering battle dynamics.
- Increased Difficulty: Teams and bosses throughout the game, especially in the late stages, have been made more challenging to provide a tougher experience.
- Enhanced Encounters: Encounter rates and Pokémon availability on routes have been improved. Most Pokémon lines, including those not normally accessible before surfing, are now available earlier.
- Expanded Pokédex: The Pokédex has been expanded to 200 entries, featuring Pokémon primarily from Johto and some from Hoenn. This expansion helps fill in type gaps, such as introducing more Dark-type Pokémon.
- Type Swaps: The PSS (Physical/Special Split) is not implemented, but Dark and Ghost types have undergone a swap: Ghost moves are now Special, and Dark moves are Physical.
- Game Corner Changes: The cost of items in the Game Corner has been reduced, making it more accessible.
- Relearning TMs and Move Tutors: All TMs and moves taught by tutors can be relearned, providing flexibility in building your team.
- Additional Changes: The documentation includes numerous other modifications to refine and enhance the gameplay experience.
